Preparing for Christmas: Week 3 - O Root of Jesse

CJ preached on the "Root of Jesse" for the third week of our Advent Series in Isaiah. During Advent, Christians are called to prepare their hearts to celebrate Christmas. What are some practical steps we can apply the sermon and prepare our hearts for Christmas?

  1. Meditate on Scripture. In light of Sunday's sermon on "Christ as Root and Shoot," consider reading Isaiah 11:1-10, John 15:1-11, Colossians 1:15-23, Galatians 5:22.

How is Christ both the root and shoot of Jesse? In what ways is he the root and shoot of your life? What does it mean to abide in him and to bear spiritual fruit?
  2. Ask Christ to Come Again. This is what Advent is all about. Spend time in prayer asking God to come again. This week, ask Jesus to come in new life -- into your heart and life today, and with finality in glory. Ask him to bring resurrection from that which is a burned out stump in your life, work, family, city, and world.
  3. Start a Christmas List. In your prayers, begin a list of what you want from Jesus. Approach your Heavenly Father like a kid -- don't hold back. Ask in faith. What do you want Christ to do today? Why do you want him to come again?
  4. Listen to Christmas Music. Especially those that express longing. "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is a particularly good song for Advent.
